Overview

Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), a post-secondary education institution in Singapore, prepares students for employment using industry-standard teaching. The university, established in 1963, has grown over the years into a hub of opportunity and promise. Every student who attends NP can achieve a lot, grow a lot and walk away with a wide range of exciting post-graduation job prospects.

The NP campus is beautiful and green, with a modern and eco-friendly energy. It’s also in the middle of exciting Singapore. The streets are calm and connected with nature, but many facilities and amenities for extracurricular fun and student recreation are nearby.

The learning environment at NP is challenging and interesting, but it’s also welcoming and friendly. The full-time student population of almost 15,000 is a real community, and so is the alumni community of over 180,000, spread across the globe but still connected by an amazing, adventure-filled academic journey at NP.

There’s also a great choice of courses and programmes. There are over 30 full-time courses, 52 part-time courses and 200 short courses to choose between. Whatever a student decides to apply for and later study at the institution, NP’s role is to prepare undergraduates for what comes next. For professional life. Highly qualified teachers deliver industry-based education, with research opportunities and practical experiences built into the learning.

NP cares deeply about its students and their futures. NP gives them the student support they need as soon as they need it, and they can stay focused and happy. NP gives them the resources to plan their careers (in line with their personal aspirations), and they can prepare for work before they leave university. NP gives them lots of different routes to financial aid, including scholarships that recognise academic merit, and they are encouraged to work hard.

It all adds up to create a supportive, collaborative learning environment perfect for any student, including international students. Moving to Singapore and joining a new community will come with an adjustment period, but NP will make this phase as short as it can, and everyone will feel at home soon enough.

Teaching Quality

At NP, student programmes are flexible and different learning styles are considered. This is a big part of NP’s commitment to high-quality teaching. Teaching that works for all, not just for some. NP’s teaching quality is supported by modern technology and facilities.

These things allow students to get hands-on experience in their chosen field with the support of staff. This might mean getting involved in research, working with industry-standard equipment, or just learning in a comfortable, well-designed teaching room.

NP also has an impressive faculty-to-student ratio of one to five. With a ratio like this, every student has lots of opportunities to work with their lecturers and tutors in small groups or even one on one, asking questions and getting help when help is needed. No student has to feel lost, left out or unheard in class like they might at a school with a worse faculty-to-student ratio.

NP is the ninth-best university in Singapore and one of the first in the country to introduce collaborative learning (learning that actively involves and connects with students). Plus, research efforts at NP get more exciting every academic year.

The biggest research focus at NP is creating a more sustainable future, and there are also some important robotics research projects currently ongoing. Students are encouraged to be curious, get involved with NP’s research efforts and work with staff on eco-friendly innovations. From great research to quality teaching, programmes of study at NP tick every box.

Entry Requirements

NP has several university entry requirements that any applicant must meet in order to be considered for admission. Some entry requirements are general and apply across all courses, but others are programme specific. The general university requirements for undergraduate applicants are:

  • The equivalent of a secondary school leaving certificate/high school diploma (specifics will be different for each country for international students)
  • A minimum level of English language understanding (usually proven by an approved English proficiency test and a certain English score on this test)
  • An ability to cover tuition fees
  • An ability to provide all the relevant supporting documents for an admission application (like transcripts and a passport copy)

Requirements are the same for postgraduates, other than the fact that they will instead need previous relevant university qualifications, at least equivalent to the level of a bachelor’s degree. Minimum grade requirements will change between courses and levels of study, as will potential required subjects. Students can browse the NP website to find a full list of entry requirements for their chosen programme.

For an example of the subjects and grades that this university may expect, a student from the USA who wants to become an NP undergraduate must have a Year 12 High School Diploma with a minimum grade of B in English and mathematics. Also, a B minimum in their two best subjects (beyond English and mathematics) and one relevant subject, a total of 5 minimum B grades.

English Score Required

To study at NP, a certain standard of proficiency in the English language may be required. There are some exceptions, but usually, international students who don’t speak English as a first language will need to prove their English understanding with a proficiency test.

NP accepts a lot of different testing methods, including the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). For each testing method, students will need to get a minimum English score to be eligible for admission.

The general overall IELTS band score requested of applicants is 6, while the general overall TOEFL score (for the online TOEFL) is 78. Specific courses might ask for higher scores, so students should do their own research before submitting an application to make sure they meet the standards of the university and their particular programme. There is more information about English requirements available on the NP website, including details of exemptions from proficiency tests.

Admission

The university admission process begins when a person has checked the application periods for their specific qualifications and accessed the Direct Admissions Exercise (DAE) portal. Here, they will need to fill in any general personal details, share their education history and choose up to three of NP’s course options (making sure that they’re eligible to apply for each of them). If successful, the applicant will receive just one offer of course admission from the university.

When applying, students (domestic and international) will also need to share some supporting documents. For international students, these documents will include a form of ID, academic transcripts, exam results and other pieces of paperwork connected to studying abroad in Singapore.  Any documents not in English should be sent with an officially notarised English translation.

Once everything has been provided to NP, applicants should check the DAE portal. This is where they will find a student admission decision once the university has finished assessing their application. If successful, soon-to-be NP students will receive an enrolment package filled with instructions, including:

  • How to accept the admission offer
  • What happens after the offer is accepted
  • How fees are paid
  • How to explore financial assistance options
  • When orientation is, and what orientation includes

Offers are accepted online via the eEnrol portal. For international undergraduates, tuition fees at NP are around SGD 9,000 to SGD 10,000 annually, though this will vary depending upon their chosen programme and its length.

Scholarships & Funding

NP is an institution that wants every student to get a good education, no matter their background or current financial situation. It’s also an institution that believes in rewarding hard work and impressive student efforts.

For these reasons, NP offers a range of university scholarships, awards, grants, and bursaries to help domestic and international students reduce their fees. Funding studies (especially studies abroad) can be difficult, and NP wants to help wherever it can.

There are lots of different scholarships available to help. Donor Scholarships, for example, are awarded to students who have shown a passion for (and talent in) their subject, actively participating wherever they can. The award amount of a Donor Scholarship varies between programmes and years, and students can’t choose to apply on their own. Instead, they will be invited to apply if they’re eligible.

There’s also the Polytechnic Foundation Programme Study Award, open to students on foundation programmes with good academic results, leadership qualities and values that reflect NP’s values. Again, the award amount varies, and eligible students will be contacted and invited to apply.

Scholarships and awards aren’t the only types of financial assistance available at NP. Students can apply for a bursary that significantly reduces the full cost of tuition if they have a financial need or are experiencing sudden financial hardship.

International students with a per capita income (PCI) of less than SGD 500 (or domestic students with a PCI of less than SGD 800 may be eligible to receive a donor bursary with a value of around SGD 1,500 to SGD 1,800. To receive this, students who are currently enrolled in a course at NP can apply via the NPAL Student Portal.

University Structure

NP is an institution that offers its students many different subjects and courses to a professional, high-quality standard. There are 39 full-time courses in total, organised into NP’s nine academic schools:

  • The School of Business & Accountancy
  • The School of Design & Environment
  • The School of Engineering
  • The School of Film & Media Studies
  • The School of Health Sciences
  • The School of Humanities & Social Sciences
  • The School of InfoComm Technology
  • The School of Interdisciplinary Studies
  • The School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology

Also distributed across these schools are lots of specialist facilities and research centres. The research centres at NP give students and staff members the chance to make new and exciting discoveries focused on sustainability and eco-friendly development. The NP campus, like most professional industries, is using technology to make new things possible each year.

One great example is the Robotics Research and Innovation Centre (RRIC), which works with local and international businesses to create robotic solutions to the problems currently facing the world. NP research teams are always using their resources to help create a better, smarter global community.

Facilities

NP has all the academic and recreational facilities it needs to make a student feel at home on campus. The Lien Ying Chow Library is a popular student activity centre for study and research. Not only does it contain thousands of digital and physical learning materials, it also offers students the opportunity to book study rooms and has lots of great study spaces. There’s room in the NP library for group work and individual, focused learning.

The NP Smart Campus is full of other great learning facilities. There are labs, lecture theatres and immersive spaces that encourage new education technology like virtual reality (VR) headsets. The Bloomberg Finance Lab, for example, is designed to allow students studying finance to get hands-on experience in managing investment funds, preparing them for the working world and increasing their employability.

NP’s student recreation centre is a large sports complex that offers students the opportunity to keep active during their time at Ngee Ann. It includes a modern, well-equipped gym, a running track, an Olympic-sized pool, various sports courts, and much, much more.

In terms of the university’s food options, the canteen dishes up a number of different cuisines and is full of different restaurants for students to choose from. Since the canteen is always full of students socialising and relaxing between classes, it’s an important student activity centre and a great place to get to know new people and make new friends. There’s even a Starbucks in the canteen where students can grab a hot coffee first thing in the morning to get them ready for the day ahead.

Accommodation

Anyone studying at NP will be expected to organise their own university accommodation before their course begins. There are lots of student accommodation options in Singapore and the area local to campus, though, so students shouldn’t worry, they’ll find a place. Student houses and apartments to consider include The Creek and The Hillford, both close to campus with great bus links.

Students can also choose to search for accommodation a bit further away, as the university is also very close to a train station and a commute is very possible. There’s no on-site accommodation at the Smart Campus, but if anything, this is a plus. It means that students get to really experience authentic student life in Singapore.

Support staff at NP can offer a lot of accommodation search help to international students. They will make sure a student has found the right place to stay before they arrive in the country, and they will be available to answer any questions that pop up during the process.

Student Support

NP cares about its students and wants to make sure that their emotional wellbeing is taken care of. When students are happy and free of worries, they can work to the best of their abilities without any barriers to learning. Because of this, the student support programme at NP aims to solve any problem a student could have, offering a lot of helpful student services related to academic, personal, and financial issues.

Academic advisors at NP are student guides, always ready with advice and guidance. They can refer students for counselling if stress and emotional issues are preventing academic success, but they can also help with study skills and learning techniques.

Emotional student support services include NP’s team of professional counsellors. Students can book appointments with these counsellors online via the university website, and sessions are available face-to-face or over Microsoft Teams (for maximum student convenience). There are also several self-care guides on the NP student portal. These guides can help students to focus on their mental and physical wellbeing, work through any difficulties and enter a better headspace.

Financially, there are bursaries available to students in need and advisors ready to help point students in the right direction. Overall, there’s nothing a student can’t be helped with at NP. Happy, healthy students are the goal, and the university puts in the work to make sure all students can stay happy and healthy.

Graduate Outcomes

NP is a post-secondary institution. It makes sure that students enrolled are as informed and ready for the world beyond university as they can possibly be, and it always has. Thanks to the career services and learning standards at this university, graduates leave with excellent job prospects and a strong sense of direction.

The university’s approach to learning opens up career options of all kinds to students. A student can specialise early, take up internships and work placements and get to know their industry very well before they ever enter the field as a full-time working professional. This is very valuable and very interesting to employers. NP also offers a range of short courses designed to create a path to professional success, particularly in the fields of data analysis and artificial intelligence (AI).

Lots of employment services are available to current students and recent alumni. They’re helped with their job search. They’re invited to workshops on CV writing and interview technique. They’re invited to networking events and careers fairs. They’re offered one-to-one career coaching sessions with an experienced career guide.

From the day someone starts at NP until three years after they finish their degree, they’re offered career support by the university. Every student who attends NP has many chances to develop a professional plan and leave the university highly employable, with lots of useful skills and practical experience.

Applicants wanting to learn more about the career services NP offers should visit the university’s website, which provides details on all of the options the university is currently offering, as well as links to important career and employment resources.
