The Department of Music offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduates may pursue either a Bachelor of Arts (BA), or a Bachelor of Music (BM) with a number of possible performance emphases. These include a BA in Music Studies, with optional emphases in Ethnomusicology, Western Art Music, or Interdisciplinary Studies, and a BM with optional emphases in Piano, Voice, Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass), Woodwinds (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon), Brass (Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba), Percussion, and Composition. The possibility of double majors with other disciplines exists, but requires careful advance planning and regular monitoring through the department's faculty and staff undergraduate advisors. Non-majors may also complete a Minor in Music. The Bachelor of Arts in Music Studies (BA), balances musical studies in history, musicianship, theory and performance with the broad general education implied by a liberal arts degree. The Music Studies Major of the Bachelor of Arts degree program offers a wide range of options within a liberal arts degree. Students take the same set of GE requirements as all BA students in the College of Letters and Science. The core academic courses: music theory, musicianship, analysis and music history, are the same as for the BM. The BA requires fewer Music courses than the BM which can be more conducive to accomodating double-majors, although any Music student can pursue a double-major. As a capstone, Music Studies majors must complete a senior project which may be an recital (in performance), a composition, or a research paper.
