The Master of Science in Biotechnology and Chemical Science (BTCS) prepares students for work in a variety of professional settings, including the food science, cosmetics, biopharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, or for academic research and graduate study. The program is appropriate for students holding a baccalaureate degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related sciences, or for those who have taken the prerequisite undergraduate courses. Biotechnology is one of four tracks within the program. One of the first dedicated biotechnology graduate programs in the Chicago area, the biotechnology track within the MS in Biotechnology and Chemical Sciences has trained hundreds of early-career scientists. Our 36-credit-hour program can be completed in as little as three semesters and features core and elective coursework in a variety of biotech-related disciplines. Students can customize their course of study to fit their career experience and professional goals. The objectives of the biotechnology and chemical science master's degree programs are to provide practical laboratory skills and a strong conceptual foundation, as well as to prepare students for the application of these skills in the workplace. Academic, volunteer, research and/or internship opportunities that enhance students' skills and prepare them to advance in their chosen field.
