Because electrical engineering is a hands on profession, you'll take your new theoretical skills into real lab situations where you'll work on electrical, electronic, and digital components. You'll use cutting-edge technology to help solve the electrical problems that are vital to our electrical world. As well, as you move through the program, you can specialize in an area of your choice. And when you graduate, you'll have a range of job opportunities with engineering design offices, plant engineering departments of process industries (such as steel, paper, plastic and chemical), power utilities or computer and instrumentation manufacturers.

Upon completion, the skills you'll have learned will be as diverse as your career options. Join an established team of designers, or work as a supervisor. Perhaps your skills are more suited to electronic sales. Whatever your choice, you'll be trained to spark-up an incredible career in a respected and in-demand career.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this program are very versatile and may work in an engineering design office with manufacturers of automated equipment, or in the plant engineering departments of process industries such as steel, paper, plastic and chemical. Other opportunities exist with power utilities and with computer and instrumentation manufacturers. Graduates generally work in design but may also be involved in technical sales, maintenance and supervision.

Program Description

This program is a three-year, seven level program that will ready graduates for jobs in growth areas of automation, network communications, electrical utilities/protection, process control, electronics and embedded systems. Students will study electrical system design, automation, power generation/distribution and develop practical skills. Graduates will be skilled in AutoCAD, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, PLCs, motors, electronics, programming and industrial automation. Throughout the program, students will apply this knowledge in conjunction with the Canadian Electrical Code, workplace health and safety and project management applications. Additionally, students will enhance their interpersonal and communication skills.

Co-operative Education

Applicants seeking a co-op endorsed advanced diploma should apply to the Electrical Engineering Technology (Co-op) program, Program Code ELY6.

Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

1. analyze, interpret, and produce electrical and electronics drawings, technical reports including other related documents and graphics.

2. analyze and solve complex technical problems related to electrical systems by applying mathematics and science principles.

3. design, use, verify, and maintain instrumentation equipment and systems.

4. design, assemble, test, modify, maintain and commission electrical equipment and systems to fulfill requirements and specifications under the supervision of a qualified person.

5. commission and troubleshoot static and rotating electrical machines and associated control systems under the supervision of a qualified person.

6. design, assemble, analyze, and troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuits, components, equipment and systems under the supervision of a qualified person.

OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (M), or Open (O) stream WITH:

ONE of the following: Mathematics for College Technology 12C or Foundations for College Mathematics 12C or Advanced Functions 12U or Calculus and Vectors 12U AND ONE of: Physics 12C, 12U, 11C or 11U Minimum final grade for Math course is 65. Mathematics for College Technology 12C or Calculus and Vectors 12U preferred. Applicants who lack required courses may be admitted to the program subject to appropriate prior upgrading.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 550 for the paper-based test (PBT), or 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years

Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years

An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years

Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10
